How much does a trip to Japan really cost in 2026? With the yen at multi-decade lows ($1 = ¥150, €1 = ¥160), Japan is more affordable than ever for Western travelers.

The average budget reported by travelers is about $80-85 per day per person (excluding flights), based on 2024-2025 surveys. But this varies hugely by travel style.

Daily budget by traveler profile (excluding flights)

Budget: $50-80 per day

  • Accommodation: hostels ($22-40), capsule hotels ($28-50), guesthouses
  • Food: konbini meals, ramen at $5-9, gyudon at $3-5, supermarket discounts after 7 PM
  • Transport: local buses, walking, cycling. The JR Pass is no longer automatically worth it since the 2023 price hike
  • Activities: free temples, walks, markets. Many Japan experiences cost nothing

Mid-range (most common): $100-170 per day

  • Accommodation: business hotels ($55-100), 3-star hotels, entry-level ryokan
  • Food: mix of local restaurants + izakayas + some mid-range dining. Food budget ~$28-40
  • Transport: regional passes, individual JR tickets, occasional short taxis
  • Activities: museums, cooking classes, onsen, day trips to Hakone or Nara

Premium: $220-450 per day

  • Accommodation: high-end ryokan with private onsen ($170-330), 4-5 star hotels
  • Food: omakase, kaiseki, counter sushi bars, gastronomic experiences
  • Transport: taxis, shinkansen green car, private transfers
  • Activities: private guides, exclusive tea ceremonies, geisha evening in Kyoto

Tips to optimize your Japan budget

Flights

  • Book 4-6 months ahead. Best prices are typically in January-February and June
  • Peak season (cherry blossoms late March-early April, Golden Week late April, autumn November): flights $900-1,400
  • Off-season: $700-900, sometimes less with layovers
  • Compare arrival airports: Fukuoka or Osaka Kansai are sometimes cheaper than Tokyo Narita

JR Pass: analyze before buying

The national JR Pass increased 66% in 2023. It is no longer automatically worth it. Calculate on Japan Guide with your exact itinerary. Regional passes (Kansai, Hokuriku, Kyushu) often remain excellent value.

Accommodation

  • Capsule hotels offer great value ($28-50) and a unique experience
  • Ryokan often include kaiseki dinner and breakfast, which offsets the higher price
  • Book on Booking.com or Agoda for the best hotel prices in Japan (Airbnb is legal but regulated)
  • Travel with a pocket Wi-Fi or eSIM to avoid paying for hotel Wi-Fi

Food

  • Supermarkets discount prices 20-50% after 7 PM on fresh items and bento
  • Konbini (7-Eleven, Lawson) sell excellent onigiri ($1-2) and bento ($3-5)
  • A ramen costs $5-9 and is a full meal. Gyudon (beef bowl at Yoshinoya, Matsuya) are $3-5
  • Tap water is safe to drink everywhere in Japan: no need to buy bottles

Total 2-week budget (2026 estimate)

  • Budget: $2,100-2,900 all-in (flight + accommodation + food + transport + activities)
  • Mid-range: $3,100-4,500 all-in
  • Premium: $5,500-9,000 all-in
