How much does a trip to Japan really cost in 2026? With the yen at multi-decade lows ($1 = ¥150, €1 = ¥160), Japan is more affordable than ever for Western travelers.
The average budget reported by travelers is about $80-85 per day per person (excluding flights), based on 2024-2025 surveys. But this varies hugely by travel style.

Tips to optimize your Japan budget
Flights
- Book 4-6 months ahead. Best prices are typically in January-February and June
- Peak season (cherry blossoms late March-early April, Golden Week late April, autumn November): flights $900-1,400
- Off-season: $700-900, sometimes less with layovers
- Compare arrival airports: Fukuoka or Osaka Kansai are sometimes cheaper than Tokyo Narita
JR Pass: analyze before buying
The national JR Pass increased 66% in 2023. It is no longer automatically worth it. Calculate on Japan Guide with your exact itinerary. Regional passes (Kansai, Hokuriku, Kyushu) often remain excellent value.
Accommodation
- Capsule hotels offer great value ($28-50) and a unique experience
- Ryokan often include kaiseki dinner and breakfast, which offsets the higher price
- Book on Booking.com or Agoda for the best hotel prices in Japan (Airbnb is legal but regulated)
- Travel with a pocket Wi-Fi or eSIM to avoid paying for hotel Wi-Fi
Food
- Supermarkets discount prices 20-50% after 7 PM on fresh items and bento
- Konbini (7-Eleven, Lawson) sell excellent onigiri ($1-2) and bento ($3-5)
- A ramen costs $5-9 and is a full meal. Gyudon (beef bowl at Yoshinoya, Matsuya) are $3-5
- Tap water is safe to drink everywhere in Japan: no need to buy bottles

- Premium: $5,500-9,000 all-in
